PRESS RELEASE: Two pedestrians struck in KCMO

Two pedestrians were struck in a crash that occurred on the afternoon of Wednesday, April 15.

The crash occurred near 98th Street and Wornall Road around 4:20 p.m. According to police, a man and a woman were attempting to cross the street when they were struck by the driver. The driver stopped, provided a statement, and was eventually released.

The man, identified as 83-year-old Theodore “Ted” Schroeder, died at the scene. The woman, identified as Linda Schroeder, was transported to a local hospital where she was last listed in stable condition after undergoing surgery.

“We’d like to extend our sincere condolences to the Schroeder family, their friends, and the Lutheran Church of the Resurrection in Prairie Village where they were active members,” said Eric Rogers, executive director for BikeWalkKC. “We hope that Linda will continue to recover from her surgery and the other injuries she sustained in the crash.”

“The safety of pedestrians and other vulnerable road users should be a top priority under the stay-at-home order,” noted BikeWalkKC policy manager Michael Kelley. “We’ve always needed to do more as a city to protect people outside of a car, and that remains especially true during this crisis.”

As BikeWalkKC has stated in the past, what deserves the brunt of the blame for these crashes is the culture that values car traffic efficiency over the safety of human lives.
