A man was killed in a hit-and-run crash in KCMO on the afternoon of Monday, April 6.
The crash occurred in Blue Valley Park. Officers were called to the scene just before 3:30 pm. According to witnesses, two men had engaged in an altercation when one man stabbed the other. The man who was stabbed tried to flee, but was run over by the assailant, who initially fled the scene in their vehicle before abandoning it and fleeing on foot.
The victim, identified as 41-year-old Felipe Carillo, was pronounced dead at the scene. The driver, identified as Corey Darden, was eventually captured by police. He has been charged with robbery and two counts of armed criminal action.
“We want to extend our sincere condolences to the family of Felipe,” said Eric Rogers, executive director for BikeWalkKC. “We know that the situation is made all the worse because his family will not be able to properly remember him because of the physical distancing guidelines.”
“We are relieved that the driver has been apprehended and will be held accountable for their actions,” noted BikeWalkKC policy manager Michael Kelley. “We appreciate the work of our police to arrest this suspect and the willingness of witnesses to speak up.”
As BikeWalkKC has stated in the past, what deserves the brunt of the blame for these crashes is the culture that values car traffic efficiency over the safety of human lives.
