But the rapid growth of e-mobility has created real confusion, and that confusion has real consequences. BikeWalkKC’s new E-Bike Guide provides clarity and empowers readers with the knowledge to make informed, safe choices when purchasing, riding, and maintaining their e-bikes in order to have the safest and most rewarding experience possible. The E-Bike Guide is a comprehensive resource for consumers, parents, schools, and public agencies. It includes a checklist to help parents determine if their child is ready for an e-bike, a family safety agreement, comparisons of legal e-bikes vs. illegal e-motos, and an overview of e-bike laws in Kansas and Missouri.
“Parents have every right to ask hard questions about whether an e-bike is appropriate for their child and we want to help them answer those questions thoughtfully, not reactively,” says BikeWalkKC executive director Eric Rogers. “This guide gives families, schools, and communities the accurate, detailed information they need. Good information is the antidote to panic.”
The digital guide, which was funded by the Kansas Department of Transportation, the Johnson County Department of Health and Environment, Kansas City Coalition for Roadway Safety, and the Missouri Department of Transportation, is available on BikeWalkKC’s website, along with the child readiness checklist and the family agreement. Hard copies of the e-bike guide are being distributed to Kansas schools and community partners starting September 2026, with Missouri distribution later this fall.
