Kansas City E-Bike Guide

E-bikes are taking KC by storm! BikeWalkKC is working to ensure laws and policies balance safety with access and equity, dispel confusing information, and to empower people with the knowledge to make informed, safe choices when purchasing, riding, and maintaining their e-bikes. Thanks to this new technology, our hills are getting flattened and riders can now commute further and faster with far less physical effort.

The E-Bike guide is a comprehensive resource for consumers, parents, schools, and public agencies:

This guide is adapted from the “E-BikePGH Guide” originally developed and published by Bike Pittsburgh. Popham Law Firm of Kansas City, MO, provided legal review. Local Laws and Regulations

The e-bike guide includes current state laws in Kansas and Missouri. Current local laws and regulations are listed here. BikeWalkKC's Policy Team is working closely with local governments to advocate for consistent policies across the metro area, so your bike's legal status doesn't change when you cross city, county, or state borders.

Resources for Local Governments

The Mid-America Regional Council has additional resources for local government policy-makers and elected officials, including model policy language for adoption into local ordinances.

BikeWalkKC's policy team spent more than 6 months participating in a metro-wide e-bike and e-moto task force that developed regional standards for policies and laws, ensuring cyclists had a seat at the table where decisions were made about the regulations and laws governing e-bikes in the metro area.
