Two young pedestrians were injured in crashes that occurred in different parts of the metro on the afternoon of Monday, January 13.
One crash occurred in Kansas City, Kansas. A 13-year-old boy was attempting to cross the street in a crosswalk near South 55th Street and Osage Avenue when he was hit by a driver who fled the scene. That driver was apprehended by police a short time later.
The victim was taken to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
Another crash occurred in Kansas City, Missouri the same afternoon. Officers were called to West 63rd Street and Brookside Boulevard on reports that a 14-year-old girl had been struck by a driver.
The victim was taken to the hospital with serious injuries and is now recovering at home. The driver remained on the scene.
“Our focus at this time is on the victims,” said Eric Rogers, executive director for BikeWalkKC. “We’re hoping that they both will recover from their injuries.”
“This is why we need Vision Zero now in Kansas City, Missouri,” said Michael Kelley, BikeWalkKC’s policy manager. “In addition to Vision Zero, we also stand ready to work with the Unified Government in Kansas City, Kansas on policies to protect vulnerable road users, including a stronger Complete Streets policy.”
