PRESS RELEASE: Young cyclist struck in KCMO

A teenage cyclist was seriously injured in a crash on Wednesday, July 10.

The crash occurred near the intersection of 26th and Indiana around 5:40 p.m. The driver of an SUV was heading northbound when they struck the victim.

The driver stopped at the scene and cooperated with police. The teenager was transported to a local hospital where they were listed in critical condition. As of Wednesday evening, police had not been able to identify the victim and are asking for the public’s help.

“We’re relieved to hear that the driver stopped and cooperated with authorities,” noted Eric Rogers, policy director for BikeWalkKC. “We also are asking for the public’s help in identifying the victim.”

“Everyone, but especially young people, deserve to be able to ride their bikes without having to worry about getting hit by a car or truck,” said Eric Bunch, policy director for BikeWalkKC. “We hope that the victim will be alright, but we also hope this can spur a closer look at ways to make that street safer for everyone.”

As BikeWalkKC has stated in the past, what deserves the brunt of the blame for these crashes is the culture that values car traffic efficiency over the safety of human lives.
