39th Street has long been known as a dangerous corridor in Midtown Kansas City when it comes to traffic safety. In recent years, those concerns have been confirmed by data. According to the city’s Vision Zero Action Plan, 39th Street is currently one of the most dangerous streets in the city when it comes to crashes, serious injuries, and fatalities.

At long last, it appears the city is taking steps to address those challenges.

City staff recently hosted a public meeting where they proposed changes to make the street safer for pedestrians, transit users, cyclists, and drivers alike. The main component of this plan would be to institute a road diet.

Road diets are a proven safety countermeasure that has been shown to reduce crashes, serious injuries, and fatalities. They have been effective enough that the City Council adopted a road diet implementation ordinance to spur their use as part of the city’s ongoing resurfacing efforts. That ordinance prompted city staff to explore a road diet as part of the planned resurfacing of 39th Street.

We’ve come a long way, but we can’t go further without your help. Here’s what you can do to ensure the proposed improvements for 39th Street move forward:

  • Take the survey for 39th Street.
  • Encourage city leaders to pursue the road diet and other safety improvements.
  • Tell your friends and neighbors to do the same.

As we often say, advocacy is a team sport. We have made it this far because of the countless neighbors, students, business owners and others who believe in a safer 39th Street. With your voice, we can send a clear message that the time is NOW to take the plans for a calmer 39th Street from the paper to the pavement.
