Blue River Road is a well-known corridor in South Kansas City. First built in 1929 by Jackson County, the route runs through a scenic, heavily-forested part of the area.
Unfortunately, the road has fallen into disrepair. The road has experienced multiple structural failures over the years and city officials have had to close portions of the road for safety reasons.
As a result, City Hall is now exploring options to either repair Blue River Road to its previous state or to create something else. The options that have been proposed include:
- Option 1A: Rebuild existing road (Cost: $30M – $46M)
- Option 1B: Rebuild existing road with a shared use trail (Cost: $31M – $48M)
- Option 2: Shift Blue River Road into the bluff (Cost: $29M – $50M)
- Option 3A: Shared Road to Fields, Trail Only to the South (Cost: $19M)
- Option 3B: Roundabouts, One Way Traffic South of Fields (Cost: $20M)
- Option 4: Road Closure and Trail (Cost: $1M – $2M)
- Option 5: Move the roadway to the East (Cost: $42M)
For both cost and multimodal reasons, BikeWalkKC supports the road closure and trail option (Option 4).
