Your pre-loved gear consigned at Big Muddy has raised over $800 for bike helmets, neighborhood advocacy, and safety education!
Two years ago, we opened a consignment account with Big Muddy Gear Exchange and invited BikeWalkKC supporters to sell their used tents, bikes, backpacks, and more to benefit BikeWalkKC programs. And what an incredible response!Â
To celebrate our partnership with Big Muddy, we asked owners Nathan and Gina about what their unique shop means to them, and how BikeWalkKC supporters fit into the world of pre-loved, re-used adventure gear. Click here to read all about it.
Two ways you can support walking, biking, and other adventures with BikeWalkKC and Big Muddy Gear Exchange:

New family bike education series with Ivanhoe Neighborhood Council + BWKC
We're teaming up with INC to deliver bike safety education for ages 8+ through adults! These lessons will help riders build confidence, learn safety skills, and get comfortable on two wheels. The series concludes with a supportive group ride so we can practice what we've learned in a safe, encouraging environment.

Check the app for more parking-only hubs!
You asked, we're delivering! With guidance from user data and our municipal partners, we activated even more existing bike racks as parking-only hubs for your convenience. These bike racks won't be stocked with bikes like our regular hubs, but you can lock up your bike and end your trip without incurring an out-of-hub fee.
Note: Riders in Lenexa may only end their trips at designated bike share hubs, and riders on the Aspiria Campus may only end trips on the Aspiria Campus.
March 1🌷 Spring thaw for Kansas bikes
Lenexa and Aspiria bikes that have been "hibernating" since December will return to service starting March 1. Each winter, the bikes in these fleets get a full tune-up over the winter months to prepare them for the busy spring biking season. In accordance with Bike Share KC’s agreements with our partners, the fleets will be hibernating from December until March. Bikes in the KCMO and North Kansas City fleets get their full tune-ups throughout the year.
If you are a Bike Share KC member, your membership works in all of our systems. Use the app to find bikes in KCMO, KCK, and North Kansas City all year round!

Volunteers give Bike Share KC a fresh look
Thank you to volunteers (individual and representing Velo Garage Bike Club and Henderson Engineering) for helping the Bike Share KC team rebrand bikes just in time for the spring riding season!

🚨 3 reasons to go to KCMO's Public Budget Meetings
- Low turnout=big impact - Turnout for public meetings is usually pretty low. If you bring two neighbors who also really care about safer streets and great bus service, you can have a really big influence on what gets funded.
- KC is basically a small town - At public meetings, you can meet city leaders, ask questions, and share your feedback. Face-to-face conversations are a lot more memorable than anonymous surveys, and it's harder to say "no" to a person than an email.
- You don't get what you don't ask for - City leaders aren't mind readers, and they don't know how important safer streets are to their constituents unless you tell them.

Welcome to our new series, Rules of the Road with Popham Law! For the next few months, attorney Paul Anderson will answer common questions about bicyclists' rights and responsibilities.
Q: Are bikes treated like cars or pedestrians?
A: As a cyclist, you have the same rights and duties as drivers of vehicles: you’re allowed to be on the road, you ride with traffic, and you must follow the rules of the road, including stop signs, red lights, and yielding when required. Drivers have to respect your right to use the road and pass only when it’s safe. In some places, riding on sidewalks is limited or banned, especially in busy business areas, so the street is usually where you belong. When you walk your bike in a crosswalk, you’re a pedestrian; when you’re riding, you’re a vehicle operator. Use your common sense, be predictable, and ride like you expect others to drive around you. Keep your head on a swivel!
Paul Anderson is a trial lawyer at Popham Injury Law in Kansas City, where his practice focuses on representing people injured by dangerous drivers and unsafe road conditions. As an avid cyclist himself, Paul has successfully represented numerous cyclists and pedestrians harmed in motor vehicle crashes, giving him a deep understanding of both the legal issues and the real world challenges vulnerable road users face. He is committed to educating cyclists, drivers, and the broader community about safety, insurance, and accountability so that preventable injuries and deaths never occur in the first place. Popham Injury Law is a team of dedicated trial lawyers who represent injured victims, on a contingency-fee basis, in Kansas City and across the country, fighting to ensure they receive full and fair compensation.
Many thanks to Paul Anderson and Popham Law for sponsoring our adult bike education series this spring!

What we're reading
Part 1: Kansas City invented the crime of ‘jaywalking,’ leading the national war against pedestrians | "Fueled by auto industry propaganda, this decision set off a nationwide trend to redesign our roads for the car — at the expense of everyone else." (A People's History of Kansas City)
Part 2: Free to jaywalk: How Kansas City killed the discriminatory law it helped to invent | "Kansas City, Missouri, became the first major city in the U.S. to repeal its anti-jaywalking ordinance, after research found that tickets were being disproportionately issued to Black men." (A People's History of Kansas City)
Bus Riders Union launches with calls for Kansas City, Missouri, to fully fund public buses | "It is truly a lifeline," Forstater said. "You know folks that cannot get to where they need to get within the city are not truly free." (KSHB)
