A budget for bikes is a reason to #FeelGoodFriday!

The new year is already off to a fast start. Spring is right around the corner, but that is not the only green that BikeWalkKC will be keeping an eye on:

The City of Kansas City, Missouri is in the process of reviewing its budget for 2018 (check it out here) and we want to remind the City Council that cycling and pedestrian infrastructure are a top priority.

We want what the City wants: four of the five goals of this budget (1-public safety; 2-transportation and infrastructure; 3-neighborhoods, housing, and healthy communities; and 4-planning, zoning, and economic development) align with our goal of improving the built environment for cyclists and pedestrians.

This mutual desire for greater multimodal investment is reflected in the proposed budget in several key areas. The Capital Improvements Plan includes $184.1 million in traditional funding across several funding sources and an additional $58.8 million in funds from the recently-passed G.O. Bond. Additionally, the budget maintains previous budget levels for street resurfacing and expands street reconstruction through G.O. Bond projects. All of this translates to more opportunities to install bike lanes and improve pedestrian infrastructure.

We are pleased that the city is prioritizing active transportation and livable neighborhoods, but we still need your help! There will be a number of opportunities to voice your support for more cycling and pedestrian infrastructure considerations in the 2018 budget. The meeting dates and times can be found below:

  • Saturday, February 17 from 9-11 A.M. at Christ the King (8510 Wornall Road)
  • Saturday, February 24 from 9-11 A.M. at Guadalupe Centers (5123 E. Truman Road)
  • Saturday, March 3 from 9-11 A.M. at RB Doolin Center (1900 NE 46th Street)
  • Thursday, March 8 from 12:30-2:30 P.M. at the KCPD Community Room (1111 Locust Street)

In addition to these meetings, let your councilmember know that you want more funds for cyclists and pedestrians! You can reach out to them here.

Now is the time to make your voice heard! Help us to ensure that Kansas City, Missouri gets the green in gear!
