KCMO Public Works recently installed the city’s first bike traffic signal at 11th and Main Downtown, and is hosting a public demo Friday morning at 10:00 am.
Bike signals are increasingly common in the US as a way to give cyclists a separate phase in the traffic lights at intersections. KC’s first bike signal is on westbound 11th Street (a.k.a. Petticoat Lane) at Main, and is part of the bike box recently added to that intersection. The two new additions help people on bikes get across the KC Streetcar tracks and through the jog in the intersection.
11th Street is on the City’s bike plan with 12th Street as a future east/west corridor through Downtown, and we hope to see bike lanes there in the future.
