Press Release: Wyandotte County joins Move Your Way campaign to encourage physical activity

West Wyandotte Library to host local launch event on Saturday, March 28, 2020

(Kansas City, Kansas) – BikeWalkKC is pleased to announce that Kansas City, Kansas has been selected by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) to participate as a pilot community implementing the Move Your WaySM campaign. Move Your WaySM is the promotional campaign for the second edition of the Physical Activity Guidelines for Americans. It offers tools and resources for consumers and professionals to learn about the Physical Activity Guidelines and share its key messages. Move Your WaySM aims to help people live healthier lives through increased physical activity. In the long term, regular physical activity can help prevent chronic health problems like type 2 diabetes. In the short term, even small increases in physical activity can boost mood, reduce stress, and improve sleep.

The Office of Disease Prevention and Health Promotion (ODPHP), part of HHS, developed the Move Your WaySM campaign to help people understand how much physical activity they need to be healthy and how to fit the recommended amount into their daily lives. The Move Your WaySM campaign was initially piloted in two communities in 2019. Kansas City, Kansas is one of the eight additional communities participating in a 6-month pilot program to implement Move Your WaySM at the local level in 2020.

“We are dedicated to leading America to healthier lives by championing programs and policies that emphasize disease prevention and maintenance of good health. The eight pilot communities selected to implement the Move Your Way campaign this year have a vital role in increasing the awareness of the profound health benefits of physical activity,” explains ADM Brett Giroir, M.D., Assistant Secretary for Health at HHS. “We’re learning from these communities; and their participation and pioneering efforts will set an example for all communities throughout America on how to encourage everyone to meet the Physical Activity Guidelines.”

Since December, the Kansas City, Kansas core campaign team has been cultivating and convening community partners around Wyandotte County. Each partner organization is doing amazing work and it’s an honor to be able to promote and elevate the programs they have developed for their residents. After the March 28 launch event, residents will start seeing the Move Your Way: Wyandotte County campaign messages in the parks, on the levee and nature trails, in the libraries, from their community leaders as well as their faith leaders. We continue to seek out more partners to spread the word of the Physical Activity Guidelines.

“We are excited to be a part of the Move Your Way campaign,” says Areiona King, Safe Routes to School Coordinator for the Unified Government of Wyandotte County.  “Through the Walking School Bus programs, it’s clear the beneficial effects a little physical activity gives the students. They are more ready to learn, clear headed and have lots of fun with their peers.”

On Saturday, March 28, the Move Your Way: Wyandotte County launch event will take place, in partnership, with the West Wyandotte Library’s health fair.  Please join us from 11:00-3:00 to learn about health and wellness from local providers, serving adults and children.  There will be free screenings, food, demonstrations, and prizes!  We hope you’ll join us!
