A man was critically injured in a crash in Shawnee on the evening of Friday, November 22.
The crash occurred at the intersection of Shawnee Mission Parkway and Flint Street around 6:30 pm. Authorities say the pedestrian was attempting to cross the street when they were struck by a driver heading west.
The victim, described as a man in his late teens or early 20s, was taken to a local hospital where they were last listed in critical condition.
“We are hoping that the victim will recover from his injuries,” said Eric Rogers, exectutive director for BikeWalkKC. “We believe it is also important for the public to know more details about the crash, and in particular, whether or not the driver stopped and cooperated with authorities.”
“As a region, we are failing our most vulnerable road users,” noted BikeWalkKC policy manager Michael Kelley. “People do not deserve to face critical injury or death for something as simple as walking across the street.”
As BikeWalkKC has stated in the past, what deserves the brunt of the blame for these crashes is the culture that values car traffic efficiency over the safety of human lives.
