Design Matters: Join the Conversation

Public Meetings, Tomorrow and Thursday

Last weekend was a deadly one for pedestrians in Kansas City, with four separate incidents leaving three pedestrians dead and one hospitalized. The City of Kansas City and project partners are holding two important public meetings this week that will examine solutions to improve safety, walkability, bikeability, and transit access along important corridors:

  • Tomorrow, Tuesday, January 30: Gillham Corridor Bike Connections Study, 4:30-6:00pm at Cornerstones of Care, 300 E. 36th Street, KCMO, 64111. You’re invited to provide feedback on options for improving bike connections in the Gillham Road Corridor, which spans from approximately Brush Creek on the south to 18th Street on the north.
  • Thursday, February 1: Swope/Prospect Connectivity Community Meeting, 6:00-8:00pm at Alphapointe, 7501 Prospect Avenue, KCMO, 64132. This meeting will review options for connectivity across US 71 and surrounding neighborhoods, and Right of Way (ROW) enhancements along Prospect Avenue.

When designed well, streets can connect communities, provide transportation options, build a strong local economy, and create a sense of place — all while making streets safer for all who use them, regardless of their mode of travel. These community meetings provide important opportunities for you to participate in the conversation and ensure that your voice is heard.

Join us for the first Bike to Yoga event of 2018! We’ll gather at the beautiful Lifted Spirits Distillery, located at 1734 Cherry Street in KCMO starting at 3:00pm on Sunday, February 11.

We’ll enjoy a casual, no-drop (<5 miles) bike ride through the Crossroads and Downtown KC, weather permitting, followed by an energizing, all-levels-welcome yoga practice back at the distillery at 4:00. Participants are invited to enjoy a tour of the distillery, starting at 5:00pm, and we’ll also raffle off some great prizes.

All of this is FREE and open to all! You’re invited to join in any or all of the activities. Proceeds benefit the Women Bike KC Initiative.

Kansas City’s Newest Brewery Adopts BikeWalkKC

– Join us for Bike Trivia Night at Casual Animal Brewing, Tuesday, February 20
– Purchase “Local Motive” Pale Ale, created just for us!

Casual Animal Brewing Company is scheduled to open this February at 1725 McGee in KCMO’s Crossroads neighborhood. Its owners, Lara and Kyle Gray, determined that an important part of their business model will be giving back to the community. We are thrilled that they chose to “adopt” us for their very first Local Motive tap – a craft beer designed for BikeWalkKC, with $2 of every pour benefitting our advocacy and education efforts. We’re celebrating with a fun Bike Trivia night on Thursday, February 20 from 5:30-7:30pm. Come out for fun and games, a raffle, swag, and tasty craft beer.

The Local Motive tap will be available for the first quarter of this year, so even if you can’t make it to the event, be sure to stop by, have a pint, and say thank you and welcome to KC!

Tour de Bier Registration is Now Open

Returning for its 8th year, the Tour de Bier is a casual, point-to-point ride that explores Kansas City’s rich brewing heritage. Three routes explore historic brewiana and include stops at some of KC’s best breweries stretching from North Kansas City, through the River Market, Crossroads, Westport, Waldo, and all the way to Raytown, depending on which route you choose.

Registration is now open, and we’re offering a special $40 Winter Rate. But hurry: prices go up on February 1!

Don’t miss out on the most fun you can have on two wheels. All proceeds benefit BikeWalkKC’s programs, including youth and adult education, advocacy and policy, Kansas City BCycle, and the Women Bike KC Initiative. Registration includes free samples at brewery stops, a souvenir t-shirt and map, lunch and two drink tickets at the post-ride party, and plenty of “swag bag” fun. The ride starts and ends at Knuckleheads.
