KCMO downtown bikeways update

As you may know, the City of Kansas City’s Public Works department is proposing the utilization of unappropriated local funds to complete the long-stalled downtown bikeways project.

The City Council and its related committees are considering the ordinance, and Council will vote this Thursday on the issue.

In the meantime, there will be a public open house TOMORROW, Wednesday, Sept. 6 from 4:30-6:00pm at the Downtown Council, 1000 Walnut, Ste. 200 where City staff will share details about the project, timelines, and construction information.

47th Street Walk & Talk: Saturday, Sept. 16

Join us for a community walk on Saturday, September 16 at 11:00am to share your experiences and ideas for 47th Street.

BikeWalkKC, the cities of Westwood, Roeland Park, the Unified Government of KCK/Wyandotte County, and MARC are working together on a project to improve the 47th Street corridor. This project will include recommendations for design changes to the street to make it safer, more comfortable, and more inviting for pedestrians, cyclists, transit users, and motorists.

At the event, you will have an opportunity to walk 47th Street and interact with project team members and local officials. This is your chance to share your experiences on 47th Street today and your ideas to make it better in the future. Sidewalks? Crosswalks? Bike lanes? Parking? Tell us what improvements you think will make 47th Street work better for everyone.

The walk is expected to take between 45 minutes and 1 hour. The walk will begin and end at the parking lot of Retail Grocers Association – 2809 W 47th St, Westwood, KS. At the end of the walk, stick around for food, music, and good times at a neighborhood picnic hosted by the Westwood and Kansas City, Kansas Police Departments.

Handlebar Happy Hour on Sept. 20

New partnership: Artists Helping the Homeless

We recently partnered with Artists Helping the Homeless to provide a special Confident City Cycling/Earn-a-Bike program to three gentlemen from Welcome House, a nonprofit, sober living recovery program in KCMO. The participants learned safety and maintenance skills, and at the end of the program, were provided with a bike, helmet, lock, and lights.

Newly equipped with a bike of their own, they now have economical and reliable transportation to pursue work and reintegration into society. Click here to read the full story.

These programs are made possible through support from our generous funders, and through community bike donations. If you have a gently used adult or child’s bike you wish to donate, please contact us at
