Lawrence school district will adopt BikeWalkKC’s Bicycle Lesson and Safety Training (BLAST) program and invest in a bike fleet to bring bike safety education and safe routes to school programming to the school district in the 2016-17 school year.
The Lawrence Health Department brought BikeWalkKC in during the Spring 2016 to pilot BLAST at four schools. It was very successful and we trained several PE teachers and others on our BLAST curriculum. Now the school district is committing to continue the program with local resources: a grant from the Lawrence-Douglas County Health Department will cover the purchase of a fleet of bikes and the district’s capital outlay budget will cover the cost of maintenance. The program will also grow to include the entire district.
This is a great way for us to expand the reach and impact of Youth Education programs beyond our own capacity and reach in the KC metro area.
