BikeWalkKC kicks off bicycle friendly business program nominationsWe are launching a new program to recognize businesses that go the extra mile to support the cycling community. Features of a bicycle friendly business include well-placed bike parking, near transit routes, and discounts for people who arrive on foot or bike. Anyone can nominate a businesses through July 3rd.
A Spotlight on BLAST educator Maggie Priesmeyer
Since its inception in the spring of 2012, BLAST has reached more than 1,000 fourth and fifth graders in four school districts in the KC metro area. “Since working at BikeWalkKC, I’ve realized that I can teach people how to live active, healthy lives and also have fun with bikes,” Priesmeyer said. KC's first Ciclovia coming this fall
BikeWalkKC is teaming up with MainCor to present KC's first installment of Ciclovia, the international movement to create new space for people by temporily close streets to automobile traffic. For one day in September, Main Street in Midtown will filled with people walking, biking, strolling, and enjoying live music, parklets, local food vendors, and more. BikeWalkKC Executive Director is recipient of regional leadership award
Executive Director Eric Rogers was recently honored with a 2013 Regional Leadership Award from the Mid-America Regional Council at MARC’s 17th Annual Regional Assembly. Rogers received the award for his efforts to make the region more bicycle/pedestrian friendly and working with local governments as an advocate for the rights and interests of pedestrians and bicyclists.This is the first time a bicycle/pedestrian advocacy organization was honored by MARC. 100 Missouri Miles challenge kicks off in Kansas City
Missouri was recently named the country's Best Trails State, and on June 7, BikeWalkkC joined Governor Jay Nixon to kick off a new celebration of the state's great outdoors. 100 Missouri Miles is a new challenge to get people outside and active this summer. Missourians across the state are signing up to record their walking, biking, running, and even canoeing. Residents can log their time outside and compete with the Governor and First Lady Georgeann Nixon. Join the challenge today.

Maggie Priesmeyer, Education and Outreach Coordinator at BikeWalkKC, is the lead educator for the Bicycle Lesson And Safety Training (BLAST) program. BLAST is an innovative and nationally proven bicycle and traffic safety curriculum for fourth and fifth graders.“It makes me feel good when I see a kid get as excited about biking as I do,” Priesmeyer said. “It motivates me to do better and continue doing what i’m doing because I can tell I’m impacting a fifth grader’s life.”
