City staff and elected officials for Overland Park have been working over the last few months to develop the city’s annual budget for fiscal year (FY) 2026. As with most communities, the budget presents one of the best opportunities to urge leaders to prioritize the needs of people who walk, roll, bike, and use public transportation. In what’s been developed so far, especially among the Strategic Goals, there are some encouraging elements. This includes:

  • Beginning the development of the city’s Safe Streets and Roads for All plan
  • Considering an update for the city’s Complete Streets policy
  • Funding transportation elements for the World Cup in 2026

While all of these elements are encouraging, they aren’t set in stone. That’s why we need YOU to speak up and ensure these priorities make it into the final version of the budget. Here’s what you can do:

  • Attend the public meeting scheduled for Monday, September 8 at 7:30pm in the Council Chamber at City Hall (8500 Santa Fe Drive).
  • Encourage your friends and neighbors to do the same!

If you need some tips on how to speak to the City Council, check out our Advocacy Training 102 or read this blog post on how to get the most out of a public meeting.

As we often say, advocacy is a contact sport. The only way we can bring about changes that make it safer and easier for people to walk, bike, roll, or ride transit is to get involved and use our voices to speak up for something better. Let’s make that happen in Overland Park!
