One of the major transportation challenges in the Unified Government of Kansas City, KS and Wyandotte County (UG) is the lack of bridge access to allow people to pass back and forth between the UG and places in KCMO and Johnson County. This is most pronounced in areas along the Kansas River, where both the Central Avenue and Kansas Avenue bridges have been closed for safety reasons.
To address this, the UG is embarking on Elevating KCK: a Kansas River Crossing Study. You can learn more about the study by clicking here.
There’s plenty of work expected to happen between now and December 2025 (when the study should be completed), but here’s what you can do right now:
- Take the Study Survey: Take a moment to fill out the study survey and share insights about what improved connectivity could mean for you.
- Attend the Open House: Make plans to attend the first open house on Tuesday, July 8 from 4-7 PM at Children’s Campus of Kansas City (444 Minnesota Avenue, Kansas City, KS 66101).
- Sign Up for Updates: Sign up for the newsletter so you can stay updated on items like survey results, the second open house, and more!
Much work remains to determine the long-term strategy of connecting portions of the UG with neighboring communities along the Kansas River. Your voice is needed to ensure the study team and UG leadership know what needs to be done to build better connections for residents and others.
