Summer School: bike education for adults, families

No worries, Alice Cooper, it’s highly unlikely you’ll see a rule book or a teacher’s dirty look at one of our Summer School bike education classes. You will, however, gain confidence, bike-handling skills, maintenance know-how, and maybe even a free bike! Mark your calendars now for these fun classes taught by our enthusiastic, trained educators:

6/25 Maintain Your Ride: Taco Edition- In this Handlebar Happy Hour/Maintain Your Ride, you can start your evening with a casual spin around KC with the KC Social Ride, then round it out with Taco Tuesday and bike maintenance basics at Spokes Cafe | Cyclery. Get your hands dirty with flat fixes, shifter/brake adjustments, and drivetrain maintenance while crunching on tacos! Ride is FREE, tacos are $2, class is $10 (or only $5 if you’re a BikeWalkKC member).

7/23, 25, 30, and 8/1 Confident City Cycling: Family Edition- We’re bringing our flagship course to Johnson County Central Resource Library! Bring the family (kids 14+) and learn how to handle a bicycle for transportation and recreation, PLUS rules of the road. This class includes an Earn-A-Bike option, so make sure to attend all 4 sessions (kids only have to attend 7/25, 7/30, and 8/1) to be eligible for a free bike! Course is free, but registration is required. Minors (ages 14+) are required to submit a signed permission slip (available at the library). Sponsored by LiveWell Johnson County and Johnson County Resource Library.

8/15 Maintain Your Ride: JoCo Library Edition- Now that you have a bike and know how to ride it, you can learn to take care of it! With a few basic tools and a bit of practice, you can be changing your own flats, cleaning your own chain, and adjusting your own shifting. Our trained staff will provide hands-on training using the Central Resource Library’s new fix-it station, so bring your bike and get ready to get your hands dirty! Course is free, but registration is required. Minors (ages 14+) are required to submit a signed permission slip (available at the library). Sponsored by LiveWell Johnson County and Johnson County Resource Library.

Whether you’ve been riding for years or haven’t dusted off the ten-speed in a decade, these classes are a great opportunity to brush up on your skills, learn some new tricks, and build your riding confidence in a safe and supportive environment. We welcome new riders, group ride leaders, teens planning to commute to summer jobs, families who like to ride trails together, urban planners who want to see their city from a new angle, and anyone who is ready to take bicycling to a new level. Take summer by the handlebars!

Our members power our work, AND they get discounts on our paid classes and events! “Join the Movement” and ride with us!
