Action Alert: Speak up for Federal Funding of Bike Share and Safe Routes to School

BikeWalkKC’s Youth Education, Safe Routes to School, and B-cycle bike share programs rely on significant federal funding, and we are currently applying for the next round of those funds. We need your help to show strong community support for continued investment in these important programs. Please review the two grant applications and leave your comments at the end of each one.

Bike Share Phase 5

B-Cycle Station 1 smaller

Our fifth phase of Kansas City B-cycle will add new stations in 2019 and 2020. Potential locations include the urban core of KCMO, KCK, North Kansas City, Northeast Johnson County, and small satellite networks in other places. Building out a complete network in the regions densest areas will make bike share a viable active mode of transportation option for literally hundreds of thousands of Kansas Citians.

Local Spokes – Regional Safe Routes to School Education

Walking Wednesday at Hazel Grove Elementary in KCK

Walking Wednesday at Hazel Grove Elementary in KCK

Local Spokes is a comprehensive education program that empowers youth to bike to school and improve their neighborhood. Components include Bicycle Safety Education, Youth Ambassador Training, and Public Engagement. Arrival/dismissal evaluations and built environment assessments will inform programmatic need and implementation stage.

Rates of preventable diseases and inactivity are high among youth in Kansas City. 50% less students walk and bike to school today compared to 40 years ago. Few kids have the resources or skills and barriers are plentiful. Local Spokes aims to instill a desire for active living through biking and walking as forms of transportation.
