Overland Park considers Bike Share

Learn more about what’s being proposed and share your thoughts.

Overview

  • The City of Overland Park is exploring a possible bike share pilot for the city.
  • The pilot would see 60 electric bikes deployed at 6 hubs along Metcalf Avenue. Coupled with existing electric bikes at the Aspiria Campus, this would give Overland Park 100 bikes overall.
  • Share your thoughts on this proposal with the city’s Community Development Committee before their meeting on Wednesday, October 8 at 7pm.

The City of Overland Park has been working over the past couple of years to expand multimodal transportation elements. Creating more ways to walk, roll, use transit, and bike around town was a key recommendation of Framework OP, the city’s updated comprehensive plan. Moreover, current planning efforts and other investments are helping the city to prepare for the expected influx of visitors for the World Cup next year.

Now, the city is considering whether to add bike share to the mix.

Bike Share KC is being considered as a pilot program to determine if such an option is feasible in Overland Park. The system would be the same as the one that currently exists in KCMO, North Kansas City, KCK, Lenexa, and the Aspiria campus. Under the proposal for Overland Park’s pilot, 60 electric bikes would be deployed to 6 locations along the Metcalf corridor. Potential locations could include:

  • Downtown/Matt Ross Community Center
  • 91st and Metcalf
  • 95th and Metcalf
  • 103rd and Metcalf
  • 110th and Metcalf
  • Overland Park Convention Center

The proposal will need to go through both the Community Development and Public Works Committees before going to the full City Council. If approved, the plan would be to deploy the pilot in time for the World Cup next summer. If you’re interested in sharing your thoughts on the proposed pilot, here’s what you can do:

  • Attend the Community Development Committee meeting on Wednesday, October 8 at 7pm at City Hall (8500 Santa Fe Drive, Overland Park, KS 66212).
  •  Email the committee members (or the full City Council) and tell them your thoughts about what is being proposed.
  • Encourage your friends and neighbors in Overland Park to do the same.

The potential bike share pilot could mean a new opportunity for multimodal travel in Overland Park. Your input can help to shape this exciting endeavor.
