UPDATE May 8, 2026 : Celebrate, but keep fighting
Here’s the good news: The Washington Area Bicyclist Association is celebrating winning their recent court battle to save the 15th Street bike lane in Washington, D.C.! BIG thanks to local KC metro individual bicylists and groups Velo Garage Thirsty Thursday and Women-Led Cycling for riding in solidarity with WABA and in support of safe streets across the nation.
BUT: Federal funding for all bike lanes and trails is at dire risk. The “One Big Beautiful Bill” canceled more than $750 million in projects, congressional leaders are threatening to eliminate grants for “bike lanes and murals,” and the Department of Transportation has recently invited governors to build more lanes for cars by “reallocating them from other road uses.” You know what that means, right?

We are energized by the win for the D.C. 15th Street bike lane, and we’re using that momentum to keep fighting for safer streets in the KC metro. We are not alone. We stand strong with you and with people across the country who are demanding safer walking, biking, and transit, and we’re not going to stop until we get what we deserve: safe, healthy, and happy communities where all of us can thrive.

You may have seen recent news that the federal government is planning to remove an important bike lane next to the White House in Washington, DC. Advocates are pushing back against this change, and have called for a national spotlight to be put on bike lanes on April 21st. Because it's not just a local DC issue! It’s also a KC issue!
What does DC have to do with me?
Many of the bike lanes and trails around the KC area were built with federal grants. Those same grants are now in jeopardy as the federal government moves to prioritize driving and drivers above people walking, biking, and riding public transportation—more so than ever. Important traffic safety projects have been canceled or rolled back across the U.S. over the last 12 months, and it can still happen here.
Places like the Heart of America Bridge path, the Rock Island Trail, the brand new Buck O’Neil Bridge path, the Indian Creek Trail, the Line Creek trail, Gillham mobility path, and many more are only here today because of federal funding now at risk.
