The KCMO City Council voted to adopt the Vision Zero Action Plan! This exciting development represents an important step in efforts to eliminate traffic fatalities and serious injuries by the year 2030. In adopting the action plan, the City Council did two things:
- They have established clear guidance for how city staff can take steps to implement Vision Zero, and
- They have enabled city staff to go after new federal funding created by the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law.
Getting the action plan adopted took a considerable amount of work from a number of individuals, groups, and organizations. Since the City Council adopted the Vision Zero resolution in May 2020, BikeWalkKC has been part of the Vision Zero Task Force, along with Councilmembers Andrea Bough, Melissa Robinson, and Eric Bunch, city staff, and community partners such as LISC, The Whole Person, and the Northeast Chamber of Commerce.
But most importantly, it is because of residents like you who talked to your neighbors, contacted your Councilmembers, attended meetings, or showed up at City Hall to share why you want Kansas City to create safer streets for everyone. That included:
“I want to live and raise my family in a city where we feel safe to move around by walking, biking, and scooting.” - Ami F.
“We know this is difficult and that Kansas City has a lot of catching up to do, but we applaud your continued efforts and fully support this plan for our beautiful city.” - Clark G.
“Please help support this initiative. I want a healthy future on this planet and safe space to travel on my bike.” - Anna L.
While much work remains for KCMO to end traffic violence, the adoption of the action plan is a critical component of how we can reach that goal. Advocacy, especially from people like you, is how we will make the idea of safer streets in Kansas City a reality.
