For getting more people on bikes and riding safely… thank you, Laura!

By Eric Rogers, Co-Founder and Executive Director

After an 11 year career at BikeWalkKC, our former Director of Education, Laura Fox, is now working with schools across the US in her new role at the Safe Routes Partnership. More than 50,000 kids participated in our Safe Routes to School program during Laura’s time here!

Under Laura’s leadership BikeWalkKC’s education program achieved some amazing milestones, including:

  • Expanded our adaptive bike fleet so more kids could experience the joy of biking
  • Increased the diversity of certified cycling instructors in the KC region
  • Held a Women’s Bike Summit in 2023
  • Started an ongoing adult education program with the Johnson County Library system
  • Supported a growing number of grassroots and inclusive ride groups focused on getting more families, women, people of color, and members of the LGBTQ community on bikes
  • Developed a Train-the-Trainer program that replicated our youth education program in places like Lawrence, Topeka, Junction City, and El Dorado in Kansas; and Columbia and St. Louis in Missouri
  • Created a partnership with Children’s Mercy Hospital that trains medical residents to evaluate how the built environment impacts patient health
  • Worked with the Kansas Department of Transportation to create the state’s first ever Active Transportation Plan - and one of the best in the US
  • Served on Kansas’ state-wide Safe Routes to School advisory committee
  • Developed new e-bike resources for school and parents

BikeWalkKC now operates one of the country’s largest Safe Routes to School programs thanks to Laura’s vision and leadership. While we will miss her in our office, we are thrilled that she will continue to get more kids on bikes - but now on a national scale!
