Kauffman students need safer streets
City leaders are finalizing safety improvements that will encourage slower, more predictable car traffic and make it easier for pedestrians to cross Meyer Boulevard.
Following the Meyer Boulevard Walk Audit, one of the key recommendations made in the report was the need for more safe crossings. This was especially important for the Ewing Marion Kauffman School, as their staff noted the common sight of students having to sprint across the wide street because of a lack of safe crossings. At least one student had been struck by a driver while trying to cross.
BikeWalkKC shared recommendations from the Kauffman School, the walk audit, and concerned neighbors with city staff and elected officials. After some design work and further community engagement, city leaders have finalized plans for a safe crossing in front of the Kauffman School!

Meyer Blvd & Bushman Crosswalk, sidewalk, and safety improvements 2024
The improvements for this project will include:
- Installation of a 10’ wide sidewalk on E. Meyer Boulevard to Paseo
- Jersey barriers on Bushman Drive to close thru traffic to 63rd Street
- New stop signs and delineators
- A raised crosswalk with ADA ramps and a sidewalk connection
The work is expected to start on May 28 and should be completed by June 28.
