Type of Organization:
BikeWalkKC is a multi-faceted organization known for its comprehensive approach to community engagement, urban planning, bicycle/pedestrian education, public policy, bike share operations, data collection and research. We both teach a child to ride a bike for the first time, and advocate for policies that make it possible for that child to have a safe, efficient, and welcoming experience.
To do these things, we build relationships at the highest levels of government, and we center those relationships with the lived experiences of the most vulnerable road users. We also collect and share data that help identify challenges, define solutions, and attract sustainable investments in the built environment, transportation infrastructure, and individual and community health.
Some of our recent accomplishments include:
- Serving more than 36,000 K-12 students in our Safe Routes to School youth development programs, especially in Title I schools in the urban core and first-ring suburbs.
- Repealing and reforming unnecessary traffic laws that provided pretext for law enforcement to target Black and Brown Kansas Citians, and producing an advocacy how-to guide for other communities.
- Winning $150 million for sidewalk repairs and removing the financial burden of sidewalk maintenance from homeowners.
- Building a Bike Share program that is tightly integrated with public transit and the region’s sustainable transportation strategy.
- Developing bike/pedestrian/trail plans for communities of all types and sizes.

We seek individuals whose personal and/or professional networks can help us make new connections in the community, in schools/school districts, in the corporate sector, and with funders.
What is the designated term for board service?
Board members serve a two year term, usually starting in June, and can serve a maximum of three terms (six years).
How often does the board meet?
The meets six times per year at 11:30am on the third Wednesday of February, April, June, August, October, and December. Board meetings are currently being held in-person in Midtown KCMO.
What personal or financial contribution is expected of each board member?
Board members are expected to make an annual contribution of $100 or more.
Any additional board expectations:
- Serve on at least one board committee or task force
- Attend events and activities to meet our members and donors
- Promote the organization and its work through their personal and professional networks
- Recruit new donors and board members
- Champion corporate philanthropy with their employers, where appropriate
Our organization carries directors and officers (D&O) liability insurance.
(D&O insurance protects board members against a breach of "duty" in the event of any actual or alleged error, misstatement, omission, or misleading statement.)

Timeline
We review applications from interest candidates and meet with the each spring. The Executive Committee will select nominees in May, with board elections taking place in June.
Corporate structure
BikeWalkKC is Missouri nonprofit corporation that is registered with the IRS as a 501(c)(3) Exempt Organization. Headquarters are at 30th and Troost in Kansas City, MO, and the general service area is the five-county bi-state region encompassing Clay, Jackson, Johnson, Platte, and Wyandotte Counties. BikeWalkKC includes an affiliated c3 subsidiary, Bike Share KC, which encompasses our RideKC Bike bike share program. Board members serve on both boards simultaneously and act as one body for all practical purposes.
About the team
The Board oversees the Executive Director, who leads a team of 14 full-time professionals and an additional 15-plus part-time and seasonal employees.
