Jefferson County, MO Walking and Bicycling Strategy

What: Walking and biking plan
When: 2022
Team: BikeWalkKC, Trailnet, Jefferson County Growth Association
Client: The Jefferson Foundation
Funding: The Jefferson Foundation

BikeWalkKC – in partnership with the Jefferson County Growth Association (JCGA), the Jefferson Foundation, and Trailnet – crafted the first countywide walking and biking strategy to increase access and safety for people walking and biking. This effort has two main goals: 1) to coordinate efforts to catalyze a county-wide movement to make walking and biking a safe and easy option, and 2) to galvanize local efforts of the individual communities in Jefferson County.

While there is a physical plan that resulted from this process, the most important components of this effort include: educating transportation officials, developing action-oriented partnerships, conducting policy training, assessing barriers and opportunities to accessibility, and expanding community education around walking and biking.

Based on the feedback received from stakeholders and community members, three high value, high potential projects for the communities were identified, alongside tailored technical assistance to advance improvements and identify future funding. The priority projects represent the best way to catalyze walking and biking countywide and focus on intersection improvements, key sidewalk connections, and safe routes to important community destinations.
