Big Muddy owners Nathan and Gina present BikeWalkKC with a check from the proceeds of consignment sales

Outgrow your tent? Turn it into bike safety education with Big Muddy Gear Exchange + BikeWalkKC

We're proud to be celebrating another year of partnership for people and planet with Big Muddy Gear Exchange! Owners Nathan and Gina are committed to to keeping outdoor clothing and gear out of landfills and making it easier and cheaper for people to enjoy get outside and nature. Whether you're offloading a tent that your family has outgrown, looking for a new-to-you bike saddle, or hoping to repair your favorite rain jacket, Nathan and Gina want to help.

The Big Muddy business model is so aligned with BikeWalkKC's mission that we teamed up to create a "pay-it-forward" type of consignment account. Now, when you sell your pre-loved gear under BikeWalkKC's account, the proceeds fund our education and advocacy programs!

Since launching the Big Muddy + BikeWalkKC account in spring of 2024, BikeWalkKC friends have raised over $800 for bike helmets, neighborhood advocacy, and safety education!

To honor Big Muddy's support for safer streets and outdoor spaces, we had a little chat with Nathan and Gina about eco-friendly and budget-wise adventures:

BWKC: What gap does Big Muddy fill for the KC outdoor community?
BMGE: Big Muddy is the only dedicated shop for used outdoor gear in the Kansas City Area. We are a place where you can find what you need to do the things you love for less than buying new.   Whether you are a beginner getting in to a new sport or an expert planning your next big adventure, we have gear to get people put there.
We also repair gear! Keeping gear outside and out of the landfill is why we do what we do.

BWKC: What is your favorite thing about running Big Muddy?
BMGE: The community we have built and the people we meet are our favorite part of running Big Muddy. When a return customer tells us how great their latest trip was, it is amazing to know we had a part in making that experience better.
BWKC: What kinds of items do BikeWalkKC folks consign with you?
BMGE: If you guessed cycling gear, you would be correct! BikeWalkKC folks have consigned tons of cycling gear, kits, parts, and even bikes, but have also contributed a bit of everything:backpacks, climbing gear, mess kits, and more!
BWKC: What kinds of gear sell fastest?
BMGE: Climbing Gear does not stay on our shelves long.  With so many climbing gyms in town and a ton of new people trying out the sport, we have a lot more demand for climbing shoes and gear than we have supply.  We have recently seen an uptick in interest for backpacking and bikepacking gear as well!
BWKC: Do you have any news or events coming up you would like to share?
Keep your eyes peeled in the spring for some group bike rides, Kaw River Paddling, and Spring Sales!
