BikeWalkKC wrote code language for a Complete Streets ordinance for the City of Kansas City, MO in 2017. This project included a national review of Complete Streets policy best-practice, extensive stakeholder feedback, and coordination with all relevant city departments. In the end BikeWalkKC produced a code language that was supported by city staff, the City’s Bicycle Pedestrian Advisory Committee, and a community stakeholder group. The code language also included practical policy and implementation recommendations. To support the policy and expand its impacts, BikeWalkKC worked to build a coalition of nonprofit organizations, hospitals, school districts, neighborhood organizations, economic and environmental groups, all of whom understood the value that such a policy would bring to the city. The Complete Streets ordinance ultimately received unanimous support from City Council and is now included in the City’s code of ordinances.
