Save America’s Bike Lanes

April 21
Save America's Bike Lanes; bike lanes save lives; April 21

An event from League of American Bicyclists, the Washington Area Bicycle Association, and local KC ride organizers

You may have seen recent news that the federal government is planning to remove an important bike lane next to the White House in Washington, DC. But it's not just a local DC issue! It’s also a KC issue!

Many of the bike lanes and trails around the KC area were built with federal grants that are now in jeopardy as the federal government moves to prioritize driving and drivers above people walking, biking, and riding public transportation - more so than ever. Important traffic safety projects have been canceled or rolled back across the U.S. over the last 12 months, and it can still happen here.

Places like the Heart of America Bridge path, the Rock Island Trail, the brand new Buck O’Neil Bridge path, the Indian Creek Trail, the Line Creek trail, and many more are only here today because of federal funding now at risk.

The League of American Bicyclists (the League) and the Washington Area Bicycle Association (WABA, the local advocates) are calling on cyclists across the nation to join a day of action on April 21 to Save America’s Bike Lanes.

Here are a few ways you can participate on April 21 or any other day that week:

  • Alert your weekly group ride and/or organize a rally or ride
  • Spread the word to your friends, neighbors, and social media
  • Take a group photo of your ride on a local trail or bike lane that is important to your community
  • Share the photo on social media using #AmericasBikeLane and/or #BikeLanesSaveLives; and tag the League @bikeleague, WABA @wabadc, and BikeWalkKC @bikewalkkc

If you organize a rally or ride, fill out this form to let the League and WABA know you're riding in solidarity!
