Please join us in making a real difference to Northeast KC! Lykins Square Park is the heart of the Lykins Neighborhood. Changes to the park and the surrounding square will have a inspirational impact on the evolution of this amazingly diverse community. There are many committed stakeholders–an engaged Neighborhood Association that has given great input on programming and amenities, significant and committed funders, and city support. The opportunity to transform vision into reality is real and exciting.
Eco Abet has been working with the Lykins Neighborhood Association to focus in on Lykins Square Park and the surrounding adjacent lots. The Lykins Neighborhood is comprised of a diverse community within the larger area of Northeast Kansas City. We have also formed relationships with the neighborhood to gain an understanding of what types of amenities are needed. We are looking at improving the current park, as well as a potential community center, new housing, and mixed-use buildings.
All team designs should strive to increase connectivity between the park and surrounding blocks as well as the following considerations:
• Areas to accommodate markets and fairs
• An ADA walking path around the park with connection to surrounding sidewalks
• A cohesive branding design for signage and wayfinding
• Covered seating spaces and picnic tables for events
• Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design (CPTED)
• Integrated on-street parking for neighborhood residents
• A sense of cultural consciousness reflecting the neighborhood cultural groups
Specific recommendations based on feedback from the community
A. A neighborhood building with spaces for gathering, learning, and sharing local goods
B. Multipurpose areas to hold family picnics and celebrate with neighbors
C. Spaces for recreation including children’s play area, soccer, basketball, and walking
D. Pocket parks, alleyways, and streetscaping to connect to surrounding areas
