SUMMARY:Cranksgiving KC
DESCRIPTION:What do you get when you combine a bike ride with a Thanksgiving food drive? You get Cranksgiving\, a Thanksgiving volunteer opportunity that actually pays off this holiday season. As we gather with our families and consume massive amounts of food each November\, it’s also important to keep in mind those who aren’t so fortunate. And while your first thought might be to take the more traditional route and spend time helping at a soup kitchen come turkey day\, the truth is that many of these organizations get overcrowded with volunteers during the holidays. So grab your bike and give back by participating in CranksgivingKC here at St. Peter’s Church instead.\n\n\nIn 2005 Kansas City held its first Cranksgiving event\, and over the years it has grown into a huge event and party. For some reason\, KC cyclists aren’t into speed as much as they’re into hauling heavy loads. I don’t know if it’s a Midwest thing\, but our event here has adopted the motto\, “In Kansas City\, we celebrate the heaviest load.” So ride around the town as fast as you like\, but come to Cranksgiving in KC and don’t be surprised if some cyclist pulling a trailer full of canned vegetables rolls over your toes.\n\nA few years ago someone thought it would be fun to get the youngsters involved so “Cranksgiving Kidz” was added. It’s part “fun-ride”\, part scavenger hunt here in the Brookside area. Kids have a free pizza lunch in the gym and then take off around the area searching for clues\, racking up points and collecting food for the pantry at the same time.\n\nSo it doesn’t matter if you ride a fixed gear\, a fancy road bike\, or a unicycle (impressive!)\, because it’s all about doing something good for your community — and having a ridiculous amount of fun at the same time. Enjoy the ride!

SUMMARY:Cranksgiving\, Food Drive on Bikes
DESCRIPTION:The 12th annual Cranksgiving\, Food Drive on Bikes will be Saturday\,  November 17\, 12-6\, with a KIDZ event the same day from  11-3. Make plans now to be a part of the largest event among all the Cranksgiving events in the nation. Last year’s event netted just over 11\,000 pounds of food for St. Peter’s Food pantry. This year’s event will be even bigger and better with a party afterwards featuring live music\, Barbecue and Beer.   \nWhat do you get when you combine a bike ride with a Thanksgiving food drive? You get Cranksgiving\, a Thanksgiving volunteer opportunity that actually pays off this holiday season. As we gather with our families and consume massive amounts of food each November\, it’s also important to keep in mind those who aren’t so fortunate. And while your first thought might be to take the more traditional route and spend time helping at a soup kitchen come turkey day\, the truth is that many of these organizations get overcrowded with volunteers during the holidays. \nSo grab your bike and give back by participating in CranksgivingKC here at St. Peter’s Church instead. \nCranksgiving started in New York 1999 with bicycle messengers. Understand that all bicycle messengers are nuts. They race around town weaving in and out of busy traffic\, ignoring traffic signals and all other rules of the road. One of them decided that would be a fun way to collect food for the hungry and homeless. \nWord spread and in 2005 Kansas City held it’s first Cranksgiving event\, and over the years it has grown into a huge event and party. For some reason\, KC cyclists aren’t into speed as much as they’re into hauling heavy loads. I don’t know if it’s a Midwest thing\, but our event here has adopted the motto\, “In Kansas City\, we celebrate the heaviest load.” \nSo ride around the town as fast as you like\, but come to Cranksgiving in KC and don’t be surprised if some cyclist pulling a trailer full of canned vegetables rolls over your toes. \nA few years ago someone thought it would be fun to get the youngsters involved so “Cranksgiving Kidz” was added. It’s part “fun-ride”\, part scavenger hunt in the Brookside area. Kids have a free pizza lunch in the gym and then take off around the area searching for clues\, racking up points and collecting food for the pantry at the same time. \nSo it doesn’t matter if you ride a fixed gear\, a fancy road bike\, or a unicycle (impressive!)\, because it’s all about doing something good for your community — and having a ridiculous amount of fun at the same time.

SUMMARY:CranksgivingKC 2017 **
DESCRIPTION:Kansas City\, Missouri\, November 18\, 2017 – For the twelfth year in a row\, bicyclists in Kansas City will take part in a charity food drive event\, riding their bikes throughout the area purchasing needed groceries for St. Peter’s Social Services Food Pantry. There are no requirements other than to “get food” and “do it on a bike.” Nationally there are over 100 such events and while many are a traditional “alleycat” competition where speed is crucial\, the Kansas City event has grown into a superhuman effort\, where according to organizer Sam Swearngin\, “in Kansas City\, we celebrate the heaviest load.” \nLast year’s event led the nation for total weight collected hauling in just over 8000 lbs. Riders start their ride at 12:30PM and return to St. Peter’s by 3:30. Methods of carrying groceries vary from messenger bags and backpacks to baskets\, panniers\, and even cargo trailers. Once the riders return\, their “haul” is officially weighed in and they are rewarded with a “beer & chili feed” party in the gym with live music\, that is open to the public as well.
