North Kansas City Safe Routes to School Strategy

BikeWalkKC assisted the North Kansas City school district with an analysis of seven elementary schools to identify recommendations to improve walkability and bikeability to and from school. The outcomes of this analysis included a list of strategic infrastructure improvements that would have the greatest impact on walkability in the school areas, as well as recommendations for policy and operations changes that could enhance the function safety of arrival and dismissal periods. During arrival and dismissal observation periods, BikeWalkKC staff examined both quantitative and qualitative measures, including mode split and travel patterns. We examined how school policies interacted with site conditions and observed behavior to create a holistic set of recommendations for walking and biking. We engaged parents, teachers, and administrators directly to provide context to the technical analysis. Finally, we looked beyond the school grounds to assess the built environment and overall walkability of the school site and surrounding approaches.
