Research intern creates new evaluation tool for BikeWalkKC youth education

UMKC Senior, Lachlan Moore, joined our education team this spring as a research intern. He is a health science and chemistry student who is working toward a career in medicine and public health. Outside of school and work, Lachlan spends his time running, bouldering, and considers himself to be somewhat of a cinephile.

Under the tutelage of his research mentor, Dr. Matthew Chrisman, Lachlan worked to develop a physical competency assessment tool for the BLAST program. By comparing the results of the newly created competency assessment tool to our already implemented knowledge assessment tool. Lachlan and Professor Chrisman were able to establish some correlations between a student’s knowledge score and physical cycling competency. Unfortunately, due to the ongoing COVID-19 situation, Lachlan and the rest of the research team were unable to carry out the project to the extent they had planned. Nevertheless, the created tool will be an asset to the education team in the future!

From this experience, Lachlan says he has learned how to manage a project, develop a tool, and perhaps most importantly, how to respond and adapt to adversity. He plans on utilizing what he’s learned during his time with us throughout the rest of his education and career.

We are committed to data-driven excellence, and we appreciate Lachlan and Dr. Chrisman’s contribution to our education programs. If you are interested in bringing bicycle or pedestrian education to your youth group or organization, contact laura.steele@bikewalkkc.org
