Celebrate with Michael and other award winners virtually on May 14th at 4:30pm
Every year the National Bike Summit recognizes individuals and organizations making outstanding contributions to the bike/ped movement. Due to the pandemic the Summit went virtual, and during May Bike Month so will the award celebrations.
We are excited to share the news that BikeWalkKC Policy Manager Michael Kelley is the League’s 2020 Emerging Leader of the Year.
From the League of American Bicyclists:
EMERGING LEADER OF THE YEAR
This award is a special accolade for a young person who is new to the bicycling movement and has demonstrated exceptional and inspiring bicycle advocacy. Nominees have demonstrated leadership in their short tenure and show great potential to continue leading in the bicycling movement.
OUR 2020 AWARD GOES TO MICHAEL KELLEY OF BIKEWALKKC.
One of Michael’s nominators summed it up best: “Michael joined the movement 2.5 years ago and has quickly become a passionate advocate. Being a debate champion, he brings an enthusiasm, preparedness, and fire to public speaking and testimony at local City Halls – inspiring our members and grabbing the attention of decision-makers. I am incredibly impressed by how quickly Michael has grown into this work and am excited to see what he does in the future.”

Michael joined BikeWalkKC in October 2017 as Policy Coordinator and then became our Policy Manager and leader of our advocacy work in July 2019 when Co-Founder Eric Bunch left to join the KCMO City Council. Prior to BikeWalkKC he worked at the Overland Park Chamber of Commerce and the US Department of Housing and Urban Development. He earned his Master of Public Administration from the University of Missouri-Kansas City and his BA in political science and international studies from Kansas State University.
Michael is deeply involved in the community as board member of the InterUrban Art House and represents BikeWalkKC and the bike/ped movement as chair of the Healthy Communities Wyandotte Policy Committee, member of the KCMO Environmental Management Commission, and member of the KC Metro Mayors’ Climate Action Plan, among others. He is also part of the 2020 class of the Centurions leadership development program at the KC Regional Chamber of Commerce.
We are grateful for Michael’s leadership and look forward to celebrating his accomplishments together on May 14. Send Michael your congratulations via email, or tweet @mkelleykc.
