A person was struck by the driver of a car near Ruskin High School on the afternoon of Wednesday, October 2.
Officers are still trying to piece together what happened at the scene of the crash. Initial reports indicated that multiple pedestrians had been hit by the driver intentionally, but that information has not been confirmed.
The pedestrian in question suffered non-life-threatening injuries.
“We’re glad that the pedestrian in question will be alright,” said Eric Rogers, executive director for BikeWalkKC. “We’re going to keep an eye out for updates because we want to make sure we fully understand what happened in this crash.”
“It is quite troubling that something like this would happen on International Walk to School Day,” added BikeWalkKC policy manager Michael Kelley. “Regardless of the intent, we should all be alarmed that people aren’t safe walking on our streets.”
As BikeWalkKC has stated in the past, what deserves the brunt of the blame for these crashes is the culture that values car traffic efficiency over the safety of human lives. According to local news reports we’ve gathered, this marks the 30th crash involving a vulnerable road user in 2019.
