Join the BikeWalkKC Board in 2018

BikeWalkKC’s Board of Directors is looking for people with a passion for making Greater Kansas City a safer and more welcoming place for people who walk and bike. The Board Nominating Committee is searching for director candidates with strong leadership skills and experience in helping nonprofit organizations execute strategy and development plans.

The organization has grown quickly since its founding in 2010 to become a regional and national leader in the fields of advocacy, public policy, education, and bike share. We enjoy a growing base of loyal supporters and diversified funding base. This year we seek 2-3 board candidates who can help us expand our partnerships with a broader pool of individual and institutional supporters who share our mission to redefine KC’s streets as places to build a culture of active living.

Commitment to Diversity

BikeWalkKC strives to reflect the diverse communities we serve, and as such we actively seek a wide ranging representation of Greater Kansas City’s ethnicity, gender, age, geography, income, and life experience. Prospective candidates who can expand the board’s diversity in any of these or other areas are highly encouraged to apply.

This year we are especially interested in candidates who represent these specific communities:

  • Women and people of color
  • Health care professionals, especially physicians or hospital administrators
  • Previous nonprofit board experience
  • Northland and Eastern Jackson County residents

Expectation of Service

Board members are expected to attend regularly scheduled board meetings (at least six per year), serve on board committees as needed, provide counsel to BikeWalkKC’s executive staff in their areas of professional expertise and life experience, and volunteer for at least one major event per year.

Financial Commitment. Board members are expected to maintain active memberships in both BikeWalkKC (minimum $35/year) and the Kansas City Bike Share program ($65/year). There is currently no minimum “get” or individual board fundraising requirement above the minimum membership levels.

How to get started

Candidates who are interested in exploring whether their skills and interests align with BikeWalkKC’s needs are invited to make an initial expression of interest in board membership by filling out this form or contacting Executive Director Eric Rogers at eric.rogers@bikewalkkc.org.

Timeline

While the board considers candidates on an ongoing basis, the immediate opportunities are for board terms starting in June 2018. An opportunity to meet the Executive Committee will be available on the morning of May 9th. We expect the nominating committee to present a slate of candidates at the June 13th board meeting.

Corporate structure

BikeWalkKC is Missouri nonprofit corporation that is registered with the IRS as a 501(c)(3) Exempt Organization. Headquarters are in Midtown Kansas City, MO, and the general service area is the five-county bi-state region encompassing Jackson, Johnson, Wyandotte, Clay, and Platte Counties. BikeWalkKC includes an affiliated c3 subsidiary, Bike Share KC, which encompasses our Kansas City BCycle bike share program. Board members serve on both boards simultaneously and act as one body for all practical purposes.
