Good sidewalks and safer intersections make walking to school more comfortable for students and their families.
The R.B. Doolin Center is named after the late superintendent for the North Kansas City School District, Dr. R.B. Doolin. Dr. Doolin, who retired in 1977, worked tirelessly to ensure that the children of the district received a good education because he understood how important it was for the community. Yet it wasn’t his efforts alone; Dr. Doolin surrounded himself with good people, helped to hire strong teachers, and cultivated a rapport with parents and others to make sure that the community was healthy enough to assist in so worthy an endeavor. This made the R.B. Doolin Center a fantastic location for the third round of public meetings regarding the 2018-2019 budget for Kansas City, Missouri.
For neighborhoods and healthy communities, the proposed budget aims “To support the development, maintenance, and revitalization of sustainable, stable, and healthy communities in which neighborhoods are safe and well maintained; people have access to health care services; strategies are in place to prevent injuries and illness; and the environment is protected.
BikeWalkKC has been hard at work over the past year to serve as a voice and a partner in the active pursuit of a healthier community. We’re working with the American Heart Association to educate the community about the benefits of Complete Streets, including better health and safety. We’re working to expand bike share into more communities around the metro, so that more people can explore their communities in a healthier, more exciting way. But we’re also learning new concepts, such as Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design, or CPTED, to better inform the policies we pursue to make communities safe.

Healthy communities manifest in a number of ways, but many of those efforts need funding in order to materialize. Now is the time to remind City Council that the budget must be a tool in those efforts.
