Earn-A-Bike Students get two cool treats: a bicycle and ice cream

EABBorderStar1 Despite a 105+ degree heat index, students at Border Star Montessori left school hot but happy on July 5th. After five weeks of attending BikeWalkKC’s summer Earn-A-Bike program, 11 participants were rewarded with two cool treats: a bicycle and ice cream.

Border Star Montessori school, in the Kansas City Public School District, is situated alongside the Trolley Track Trail in Brookside, and students were supposed to test their skills riding from campus to Betty Rae’s Ice Cream shop in Waldo, a mile away. However, scorching temperatures and high humidity kept the group close to school this week. With frequent breaks between snail races and follow-the-leader rides, everyone enjoyed cold water and sweet ice cream.

EABBorderStar2This summer’s program is a combination of BikeWalkKC’s popular Bicycle Lesson and Safety Training (BLAST) curriculum and components of our Earn-A-Bike curriculum. Students focus on expanding their bicycle maintenance knowledge while practicing bike handling maneuvers guided by BikeWalkKC’s lead youth instructors. Participants with good attendance and behavior receive a bicycle and helmet with successful completion of the program.

BikeWalkKC would like to thank everyone who helped make Border Star’s summer bike program a success: LINC, bicycle donors, Betty Rae’s Ice Cream, Children’s Mercy Hospital, and parent volunteers at Border Star.
