By now you have probably heard that the Grand Avenue bridge over I-670 is slated for emergency replacement this summer. You may also be aware of Grand’s significance as a key bike, pedestrian and transit corridor across greater downtown KCMO — buffered bike lanes will soon run a significant length of Grand.
This emergency replacement is an opportunity to signficantly improve walking and biking. Widening and upgrading the sidewalks would be critical. But the bridge should also include a raised protected bike lane like this one in Indianapolis:
Even more, a unique approach to the bridge’s design could fundamentally change the environment for those on foot or bike. Take for example a bridge over a different I-670 in Columbus, Ohio. Can you even tell it’s a bridge?
