Advocacy Alert – Grand Avenue Bridge Replacement

By now you have probably heard that the Grand Avenue bridge over I-670 is slated for emergency replacement this summer. You may also be aware of Grand’s significance as a key bike, pedestrian and transit corridor across greater downtown KCMO — buffered bike lanes will soon run a significant length of Grand.

Mid America Regional Council is taking public comments on the design of the new bridge.

This emergency replacement is an opportunity to signficantly improve walking and biking. Widening and upgrading the sidewalks would be critical. But the bridge should also include a raised protected bike lane like this one in Indianapolis:

Even more, a unique approach to the bridge’s design could fundamentally change the environment for those on foot or bike. Take for example a bridge over a different I-670 in Columbus, Ohio. Can you even tell it’s a bridge?

By building retail pad sites into this bridge over I-670 in Columbus, OH, the pedestrian experience is uninterrupted.

Only from above can one even tell there is a freeway running below this street in Columbus, OH.
