KCK Commission Approves Kaw Point Trail Connector Funding

Kaw-Point-Kansas-City via Westport Historical SocietyLast night the Board of Commissioners of KCK/Wyandotte County voted 6-4 to approve funding for the Kaw Point Connector, a regionally significant project connect the Riverfront Heritage trail with Kaw Point Park and future trails on the Missouri and Kaw River levees.

A large group of about 50 supporters showed up to demonstrate strong public support for investing in trails and better places to walk and bike. Commissioners opposed to the trail project, realizing they didn’t have enough votes to defeat, called for a quick vote without any further discussion or testimony.

Mayor Mark Holland has made bike/ped issues, especially opening the river levees for trail development, a top priority of his administration. We appreciate his leadership both in KCK and regionally.

Thank you for speaking up

If called, emailed, or attended the Commission meeting, give yourself a high five. The Commissioners were impressed by the number and thoughtfulness of your comments. One Commissioner told me that your comments were the deciding factor to vote for the trail and make it a top priority.

I also want to give a big shout-out to our community partners who have done the hard work advocating for this trail and future levee trails, including Healthy Communities Wyandotte and the Rosedale Development Association.

Let’s keep the momentum going
