BikeWalkKC is seeking an AmeriCorps VISTA volunteer to serve in a new Community Ambassador role working on a project called Complete KC, our vision for a connected network of city streets that provide people with public spaces for recreation, transportation, access to nature, and connections between housing, jobs, and education. The Complete KC network will include a variety of street-level improvements that could include wider sidewalks, street trees, bike paths, green solutions for stormwater, mini parks, and more.
This is a great opportunity for recent high school or college graduates, retired individuals, or someone seeking experience in a new career path.
Improving the city’s built environment for walking, biking, and transit helps eliminate poverty by better connecting individuals to jobs, school, and services. The VISTA will be working as a community organizer to build support for this vision, and to communicate how it supports other local priorities related to public health, air quality, access to jobs and education, and quality of life. Their work will include elements of data systems, community partnerships, and collaboration.
- Become familiar with neighborhood associations, community groups, and stakeholders in urban core neighborhoods
- Develop relationships residents and stakeholders
- Attend neighborhood association meetings
- Identify individuals who are supportive of walking and biking
- Help individuals engage with City Hall to request local improvements for walking and biking
- 18 years of age or older
- Culturally competent and adept at work with a wide diversity of communities, including communities of color, low wealth, New American, homeless individuals.
- Available some evenings and weekends
The Community Ambassador VISTA will work primarily in neighborhoods in the urban core of Kansas City, MO – including Downtown, Midtown, the East Side, and the Historic Northeast. Additional work may also include urban core neighborhoods in Kansas City, KS.
Priority will be given to applicants who live in and/or have strong personal or professional ties to one or more of our target neighborhoods listed above.
Offers of employment are conditional on completion of a background check on criminal history. Any results relevant to this position will be evaluated on a case-by-case basis.
