BikeWalkKC operates some of the largest youth development programs for active transportation in the nation (and the only programs in Kansas City), and we are continuing to grow. Four in-school programs, referred to collectively as “Local Spokes,” are offered, each dedicated to educating youth and improving health through training in basic bike handling, maintenance, and community activism. BikeWalkKC also provides ancillary educational activities such as Walking School Bus programming, pedestrian education, and youth advocacy development. BikeWalkKC’s education programs have been delivered in more than 75 schools in 12 districts across the region, engaging over 17,000 students. Additionally, BikeWalkKC conducts quarterly adult classes that focus on rules of the road, bicycle handling skills, confident commuting, navigating intersections, safe driving behavior, and basics of bicycle maintenance. We incorporate short group bike rides in our adult classes to expose participants to infrastructure in surrounding neighborhoods. We also focus on transportation equity and mobility access by offering an earn-a-bike option for individuals who need a bicycle to get around.
