Case Study: Missouri Safe Routes State Network

The BikeWalkKC team was integral to the Missouri Safe Routes to School State Network, one of 19 state-wide Safe Routes networks created to focus on changing policies to support more walking and biking to school. A state-wide coalition from advoacy, education, health, government, transportation, and other sectors convened to research, and discuss, and reform policies. Our team led many of the network’s working groups and staffed much of the research and writing.

Key accomplishments of the network include:

Complete Streets Policies – Missouri now has more than twenty communities with a Complete Streets policy, covering over two million Missourians.

Curriculum – BikeWalkKC’s BLAST curriculum is a successful model for classroom instruction of bike skils and bike safety.

Underserved Communities – Our team lead a research effort to analyze Missouri’s distribution of Safe Routes funding, showing that the neediest areas are the least successful at getting funding.

Transportation Funding – Partnered with NPLAN to analyze Missouri’s school bus funding policies.
