Last night the Leawood City Council kicked off Bike Week by adopting the first Complete Streets policy in Johnson County and the fourth in the metro area. The new policy includes several elements intended to make the city’s streets begin to include all users, not just motorists:
- All new streets and reconstructed streets will be planned to includes all users, as appropriate to their context.
- City staff will develop a Complete Streets master plan.
- The city’s existing comprehensive plan and development code will be reviewed for potential improvements to things like bike parking, sidewalks, trails, etc.
With the addition of Leawood, there are now over 700,000 local residents living in communities with Complete Streets policies. Kudos to the Leawood Bicycle Friendly Committee and everyone who worked to make this happen!
