BikeWalkKC is the leading resource for street safety in the Kansas City region. We work to improve the safety of people who walk and bike via advocacy, education, and public policy.
Our safety work is guided by the Three Es: Engineering, Education, and Enforcement. We collaborate with a wide range of stakeholders in government, law enforcement, traffic engineering, nonprofits, and neighborhoods. Much of this collaboration happens through our participation in Destination Safe, a bi-state interdisciplinary initiative working Towards Zero Deaths, Kansas City’s version of the international Vision Zero movement.
Safety starts with the built environment. We advocate for local governments to build safe places to bike and walk. Build it right the first time! Our Professional Development program trains local planners and engineers in best practices and new innovations in bike/ped infrastructure. Have you ever thought it would be great to get the traffic engineers on bikes? We do that many times a year around the region!
BikeWalkKC’s youth and adult education programs ensure that people have the knowledge and skills to bike safely and confidently for transportation, recreation, and fitness. We also work to educate motorists to be aware and courteous to everyone on the road.
Enforcing traffic laws is vital to keeping everyone safe. We work with local police departments to make sure traffic laws are enforced fairly for all road users – motorists, bicyclists, and pedestrians.
